Unemployment among young graduates looking for work in China has risen to an unprecedented record level.
The Chinese government reported this week that 20.4% of people looking for work during April aged between 16 and 24 were unemployed.
According to The New York Times, this figure represents the highest level since China began announcing the statistics in 2018, with one in five young people out of work.
Although the government ended its so-called “zero Covid” policies over the past December, the unemployment rate among young people remained high.
In contrast, Chinese authorities blame the high unemployment rate among young people on unemployed university graduates, who refuse to take on craft work.
According to China’s Ministry of Education, 11.6 million university students are expected to graduate next June, an increase of 820 thousand over last year.
