Japan and the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) have agreed to establish dialogue between senior officials at a time when the country, the world’s fourth-largest oil importer, is looking to enhance energy security, Nikkei reported Wednesday.
Japanese official Ki Takaji met OPEC Secretary General Haitham Al-Ghaysis at the organization’s headquarters in Vienna on Tuesday, discussing global energy supply and demand forecasts and agreeing to launch a permanent communications line.
Japan’s poor energy resources are adding renewable resources to its consumption mix with a view to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, but still rely heavily on oil and LNG imports. OPEC producers represent Japan’s largest oil supplier.
According to Gigi sources, Kishida is expected to explore ways to stabilize crude oil prices and ensure stable supplies of liquefied natural gas to Japan.
