The US airline Airbus has signed the largest deal in civil aviation history to date, with the French aerospace giant announcing that Indian airline IndyGo had ordered 500 of its A320 aircraft to be delivered between 2030 and 2035.
Airbus said in a statement that the transaction represents a record of the largest purchase agreement in civil aviation history, with the total number of aircraft ordered by IndiGo from Airbus becoming 1330.
IndiGo was founded in 2006 as India’s largest airline with market share, according to its website, and 86 million customers used its flights over the past financial year.
Airlines are seeking to capitalize on India’s strong economy and rising population, which may shift on higher demand for air travel. In February, Andy Air India’s rival company ordered more than 470 airplanes from Airbus and Boeing.
Technology companies are also seeking to benefit, with some expanding production and opening new stores in the country in anticipation of huge customer growth.
