Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) is seeking to purchase approximately 123.770 tons of wheat from the United States, Canada and Australia in a regular tender that will close next Thursday.
Economically, Japan is one of the world’s most advanced countries, with its gross national product (GNP) ranked second globally, but mostly based on industrial production, as Japan owns little agricultural land, thus importing large quantities of its food from abroad.
In light of this, Japan has been ranked as the world’s sixth largest importer of wheat, maintaining its grip on imports of its second most important post-rice staple, wheat, buying the majority of grains for grinding through bids that are usually put up three times a month.
