The deputy head of the state oil pipeline company kaztran oil said on Friday that Kazakhstan is preparing to redirect oil exports to the Russian port of “Ust-Luga” on the Baltic Sea instead of the port of “Novorossiysk” if the situation on the Black Sea deteriorates.
The port of Novorossiysk, Russia’s largest port on the Black Sea, handles the bulk of Kazakhstan’s oil exports through the Caspian pipeline Union, according to Reuters.
This was the result of a surprise attack by Russia on Ukrainian ports earlier in August, which caused a ban on navigation in the port waters and disrupted shipping operations.
