Japan’s Kyodo news agency quoted unnamed diplomatic sources as saying that Japan is making preparations for a meeting of the foreign ministers of Japan and the Gulf Cooperation Council countries in Saudi Arabia in early September.
Kyodo said that Japan aims to strengthen relations with the Gulf countries to ensure the stability of energy supplies from the Middle East.
The agency reported that Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi will attend the meeting and may visit Egypt and Jordan. The foreign ministers are expected to discuss the agreement and technical cooperation in next-generation energy sources, Kyodo said, adding that Iran’s nuclear program may also be on the agenda.
Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida visited the Middle East last July when Japan and the GCC announced the resumption of talks on a free trade agreement.
