The meta group, the company that owns Facebook, announced on Tuesday that it had deleted from the social network thousands of accounts that were part of a major Chinese online propaganda operation aimed at promoting China’s policy and criticizing the West.
Meta said in its report that the campaign was active on more than 50 platforms and forums, including Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and ex.
Ben Nimmo, head of global threat intelligence at the US giant, said:”We estimate that it is the largest and most intensive impact operation we have seen so far, albeit unsuccessful.
Meta teams “have been able to trace their sources to people connected to Chinese law enforcement,”he said.
According to” AFP”, Meta said that the accounts in question are more than 7,700 Facebook accounts and about 15 Instagram accounts, making it her largest account write-off.
The group’s security teams were able to determine that the accounts are linked to a series of spamming activities that have occurred since 2019 and were stopped by Meta.
“For the first time we were able to find a link between this series of activities and make sure that it is part of the same process,”added Nimmo.
The targeted network regularly published positive comments about China, and in turn, criticized the United States, the foreign policies of Western countries, and those who criticize the Chinese government, “including journalists and researchers,” according to the report.
The network operated out of China and specifically targeted Taiwan, the United States, Australia, the United Kingdom and Japan, as well as overseas Chinese speakers.
The accounts and pages in question were deleted for not respecting the terms of use of the meta Group platforms, but it seems that its audience was a little bit beyond some commentators who privately published false claims.
The accounts were linked to various sites in China, at a pace of activity that seemed to correspond to office working hours. The process also relied heavily on Medium, Reddit, X, YouTube, SoundCloud and Vimeo platforms, according to the meta team.
