India has banned exports of onions to join a growing list of essential foodstuffs imposed by the government on its exports as part of New Delhi’s efforts to contain domestic price increases ahead of next year’s national elections.
The government announced a ban on onion shipments abroad until March 31, although exports of shipments of vegetables that began loading before the decision are still possible.
The ban follows government measures in August to release stocks of staples to protect consumers from rising costs.
India’s ban on onion exports comes a day after India banned the use of sugarcane juice to produce biofuels, a move aimed at expanding its sweetener reserves as well as following restrictions on wheat and rice.
