Kazakhstan plans to improve its transit capabilities by constructing a new transport route over the cross-border Irtysh River, with the goal of establishing a direct link between Russia and China.
Kazakhstan’s Minister of Transport, Marat Karabaev, stressed the significance of utilizing the Irtysh River’s transit potential to establish a new transportation link between the two adjacent nations.
“The expansion of transit prospects on the cross-border Irtysh River would enable connecting Russia and China with a new transport connection,” Karabaev said.
The Ministry of Transport intends to build a new maritime lock at Semeya in order to realize this enormous project.
In addition, a port will be built in the Tugyl settlement area, along with the construction of a 99-kilometer railway linking Tugyl to the Chinese border.
The route’s expected transportation capacity is between 2 and 2.5 million tons.
This strategic effort intends to strengthen economic links and commercial operations between Kazakhstan, Russia, and China by using the Irtysh River’s geographical advantage for efficient and smooth cross-border connectivity.
