India has opened a new office complex for diamonds that exceeds the size of the Pentagon in Surat, reinforcing the city’s aspirations to become the world’s capital of dignified stone.
Gujarat’s Surat Diamond Exchange, which covers an area of 6.7 million square feet (620 thousand square meters), became the world’s largest office complex when it was completed in July at a cost of 32 billion rupees ($384 million).
Narendra Modi will open the compound in Surat, marking another symbolic political gain for the prime minister in his term as he seeks support for a third term in next year’s elections.
The opening will depend on the Modi administration’s other efforts to strengthen Gujarat economically, for example, by reducing red tape to make it more business-friendly.
