South Korean company Samsung has unveiled its latest lineup of its flagship smartphone, the “S24”, which is equipped with various artificial intelligence features such as real-time call translation, as part of the company’s latest efforts to challenge its American rival Apple.
In 2023, Apple outperformed Samsung in the exportation of smartphones, according to data from International Data Corporation, dethroning the South Korean company from a leading position it had held since 2010.
In response, Samsung incorporates numerous artificial intelligence features into its flagship Galaxy S24 models as part of its strategy to attract buyers.
The new phones will feature real-time bidirectional voice translation for live phone calls conducted in two different languages, which the company stated is the first-ever offering by a smartphone, the “S24”.
This feature is available on the device in thirteen different languages through the training of Samsung’s proprietary generative artificial intelligence.
The feature also includes a “Search with a Circle” option, where drawing a circle around any part of an image on the screen will initiate a Google search for it. Other features encompass translation using artificial intelligence and the ability to adjust the tone of messages to fit informal, formal, commercial, or social media contexts.
There are also features such as summarization provided by artificial intelligence, translation of voice recordings, and “generative editing” of images, which can fill in non-existent backgrounds. Additionally, there is a capability to transform video clips into slow motion in real-time by using artificial intelligence to create frames that don’t originally exist.
The integrated artificial intelligence in devices denotes the generative AI functions that are installed onto each user’s device after training, and these functions do not require a connection to a cloud computing system.
Companies such as Qualcomm and Samsung are advocating for onboard artificial intelligence in devices as being more secure for personal information since it does not require data to be sent to the cloud for use.
According to data analytics firm Canalys, only five percent of smartphones to be delivered in 2024 will have the capability to utilize artificial intelligence. However, this figure is expected to rise to 45 percent by the year 2027.
To harness this advanced technology, Samsung has entered into a multi-year deal with Google to integrate “Gemini Nano,” which is among the most efficient large language models from the American company.
As a result, it will gain access to “Gemini Pro” and “Imagine2” technology for converting text into images through cloud computing.
The “Galaxy S24” series will go on sale starting January 31st.
In the United States, the starting price for the base model of the “Galaxy S24” phone will be $799, with two versions featuring higher specifications: the “S24 Plus” beginning at $999 and the “S24 Ultra” starting from $1299.
Samsung has maintained the prices of the basic and “Plus” models at the same level as last year, while the price of the “Ultra” has been increased by $100.
