Elon Musk, the founder of Neuralink, stated that the first human patient underwent a brain chip implant produced by the startup company on Sunday and is recovering well.
In a post on social media platform X on Monday, he added, “Preliminary results indicate a promising increase in neural cells.”
The National Institutes of Health characterizes neurons as cells that utilize electrical and chemical signals to transmit information throughout the brain and to the body.
Last year, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration granted the company approval to conduct its first trial to test the implantation of a chip in the human brain.
In a separate post on (X), Musk stated that the Neuralink chip will be called “Telepathy.”
Neuralink reported on its website that the chip allows individuals with quadriplegia to control devices using their thoughts.
Neuralink has encountered calls for scrutiny concerning its safety protocols. This month, Reuters reported that the relevant authorities have fined the company for violating the US Department of Transportation regulations related to the transportation of hazardous materials.
The value of the company was estimated to be around five billion dollars last June.
Four lawmakers requested at the end of November from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to investigate whether Musk misled investors regarding the safety of his technology, after veterinary records revealed issues with the chip implant procedures in monkey brains, including paralysis and brain swelling.
