The UAE’s holdings of US Treasury bonds increased to $63.9 billion in December 2023, up from $51.6 billion in November, according to the latest data released by the US Treasury Department.
The UAE remains the second largest Arab country in terms of holding US bonds after Saudi Arabia, which increased its holdings to $131.9 billion in December, up from $128 billion.
Japan ranked first among the largest holders of US bonds, with $1.13 trillion, followed by China in second place with $816 billion, then the United Kingdom in third place with $753.7 billion, and Luxembourg in fourth place with $370.7 billion, and Canada in fifth place with $336 billion.
Foreign holdings of US government bonds increased in December, reaching a new record level for the second consecutive month. Ministry data showed that holdings of bonds rose to $8.05 trillion in December, the highest level in the time series dating back to 2000, up from $7.81 trillion in November.
