According to a new report by the American agency Bloomberg, Apple has decided to cancel its electric car project that it has been working on in recent years.
The report indicated that Apple internally announced the cancellation of its ambitious project, leading to the expected layoff of some employees who worked on the project and the transfer of others to the department of artificial intelligence.
About 2000 employees worked on the project, and it is still unknown how many employees Apple will lay off after the project is completed.
The report stated that employees were informed of the project’s suspension by senior management, specifically Jeff Williams, Chief Operating Officer at Apple, and Kevin Lynch, Vice President in charge of the project.
Rumors have been circulating for years about Apple’s efforts to build its own electric car, and recent reports indicate that the company has been actively working on the project until recently. It was reported that the car, equipped with the self-driving technology developed by the company, traveled 45,000 miles in 2023.
Earlier this year, Bloomberg agency published a report stating that the company postponed the expected launch of the car to 2028.
Rumors about Apple’s electric car first surfaced in 2015 when the company launched “Project Titan” and appointed a number of prominent leaders to the project, such as the former program director of autonomous driving at Tesla and the former CEO of the electric vehicle startup Canoo.
In 2022, The Information, a tech news site, published a report discussing the company’s struggle with high employee turnover in the car development team, as well as constantly changing plans and increasing internal doubts about the project’s progress and success.
Apple expanded its efforts to build an advanced self-driving electric car.
Apple seems to be trying to focus its resources on developing generative artificial intelligence technologies to catch up with competitors, notably Microsoft and Google.
Other technology companies like Xiaomi and Huawei are attempting to compete in the field of electric cars, and they have already advanced to a considerable extent.
