Advanced irrigation models in Uzbekistan

Previously, electric pumps were used to bring water to the fields, and now the bottom of the orchard canal has been raised from the secondary canals and irrigated fields, according to the Eurenews Channel.

This way gravity is exploited in the distribution of water, which has come to flow on its own.

Uzbekistan is modernizing its regional irrigation system with a view to improving the agricultural sector’s water supply. In southern Karakalpakastan, gravity is now exploited in field irrigation instead of electric pumps.

This huge infrastructure project significantly reduces water losses.

The orchard canal, the main water artery, before reconstruction was a dirt canal and leakage was a major problem.

In the main canal water enters through the right bank canal of the Toyamoyun reservoir, which is located on Turkmenistan’s neighbouring territory. The canal is connected to a network of secondary channels — with a total length of more than 800 km — all rebuilt as part of the project covering 3 regions and 100,000 hectares of agricultural land
