The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) has announced the establishment of a $500 million fund to build Tajikistan’s Rogun hydropower plant.
The bank’s president said it had been decided to allocate the funds during a meeting with Tajikistan’s President Imam Ali Rahmon on May 17 in Beijing.
Following the meeting, the two sides discussed increasing funding for green infrastructure development in the transport, energy, housing and community services sectors.
The President of Tajikistan and the President of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank discussed climate change, the lack of drinking water and the impact of these factors on States’ economies, Tajikistan’s water and climate initiatives and the conservation of glaciers.
Rogun Station is under construction on the Vakhsh River in Tajikistan’s Pamir Mountains, with an estimated capacity of 3,780 MW.
It will be the country’s largest hydropower plant, generating 13,300 GWh of electricity annually.
