The company “BYD” unveiled its most expensive car for the first time on Sunday, a high-performance electric supercar worth 1.68 million yuan (233,450 USD), competing with fuel-consuming options offered by competitors like Ferrari and Lamborghini.
The company said in a live-streamed event in Shanghai that the Yang Wang Yu 9 car will initially target the Chinese market.
They also stated that the car can reach 100 km/h (62 mph) in 2.36 seconds and has a top speed of 309.19 km/h.
“Byd” has become the largest seller of electric cars worldwide, surpassing “Tesla” in the last quarter of 2023.
While known for manufacturing affordable electric vehicles, the company also markets its luxury models under the brands “Yang Wang” and “Fang Qing Bao”.
As the post-Lunar New Year price war approaches in China, the giant company based in Shenzhen is betting that there is still a market for luxury products that provide better profit margins.
It is planned to launch other expensive electric cars under the brand “Yang Wang” later this year in China, including a luxury sedan costing around one million yuan.
Byd began delivering cars in late November and has only one production model so far, a luxury sports car known as the U8, which costs 1.1 million yuan. The company delivered 3653 units by the end of January. (Bloomberg)
