Electricity consumption in China, a key measure of economic activity, recorded steady growth last month, supported by the overall recovery of the country’s economy, according to official data.
China’s total energy consumption rose by 7.4% year-on-year in May to 722.2 billion kilowatt-hours (KWh).
Energy consumed by primary industries rose by 16.9% year-on-year, while energy consumed by secondary and service sectors increased by 4.1% and 20.9%, respectively.
Residential energy consumption increased by 8.2% year-on-year to 87.6 billion kWh in May.
In the first five months of the year, China’s energy consumption exceeded 3.53 trillion kWh, up 5.2% from a year ago.
