Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has decided to dismiss the governor of the central bank, jalimjan permatov, and appoint Timur Suleymanov, instead of him.
The Bloomberg News Agency reported that the Senate of Kazakhstan approved late on Sunday the appointment of Suleymanov to the new post shortly after the president issued a decree to remove primatov, 51, who took office in February 2022.
Suleymanov, 45, is the first deputy chief of staff of the presidency since the bloody unrest in Kazakhstan in January 2022, which Tokayev described as an attempted coup against him. Before joining the presidential team as an assistant in 2019, Suleymanov was deputy governor of the central bank for less than a month, and was minister of economy before that.
The central bank under the leadership of permatov was criticized for maintaining high interest rates and restricting access to loans.
