The Grain Union of Kazakhstan expects that the wheat harvest in the country during the current year 2023 will reach about 14.5 million tons, down from 16.4 million tons recorded during last year 2022, trade union official Alexander Malov said on Wednesday.
Malov, during an interview with Reuters, said that such a crop will allow the Central Asian country to export 8.5 – 9.0 million tons of wheat during the 2023-24 season.
The members of the union said that despite the huge harvest and strong export prospects, Kazakhstan faces strong competition from Moscow in some of its traditional markets in the region, due to the strong Russian crop and the weakness of the ruble.
“We have lost the Iranian market due to the strong Russian wheat and barley harvest, which surpassed Kazakhstan’s exports in terms of price and volume,”Malov said.
