Kazakhstan’s Minister of Water and Irrigation, Nurzhan Nurzhigitov, revealed plans to build 20 new water reservoirs in the republic.
“Kazakhstan depends on transboundary rivers, so water cooperation with neighboring countries is a crucial factor in providing water supply to sectors of the economy and preserving natural sites,” Nurzhigitov said.
The most dependent regions are located in the south. Work continues with the countries of Central Asia on the development of a water and energy mechanism for mutually beneficial management of water resources.
“As for the development of water infrastructure, it is planned to reconstruct 15 existing reservoirs, build 20 new reservoirs, modernize, and digitalize at least 3.5 thousand kilometers of canals,” Nurzhigitov said, noting that work in these areas will be covered within the framework of the concept for the development of the water resources management system.
Currently, Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Water and Irrigation is developing a new version of the Water Code, taking into account current issues and new challenges. Our groundwater is an important factor in ensuring water security, so specific reforms are needed in this area.
