MacKenzie Scott, the ex-wife of billionaire Jeff Bezos, continued to sell billions of dollars’ worth of Amazon shares.
In 2023, nearly 65.3 million shares of Amazon were unloaded, currently valued at over $10 billion, according to the deposit.
After finalizing her divorce from Amazon founder Jeff Bezos in 2019, Scott became the wealthiest woman in the world, receiving approximately 19.7 million shares, which is equivalent to 4% of the total Amazon shares in existence, in the settlement.
Since then, she has sold portions of her stake in Amazon and donated billions of dollars to charitable causes.
Bezos retained voting rights on Scott’s shares as part of the agreement, which is why he reported it to the Securities and Exchange Commission when disclosing his 11.5% stake in the company.
In 2019, Scott signed the Giving Pledge, a commitment made by hundreds of the wealthiest individuals in the world to donate the majority of their wealth. The pledge has been signed by business giants such as Warren Buffett, Bill Gates, and Mark Zuckerberg.
Although he is not a signer, Bezos said to CNN in 2022 that he plans to allocate the majority of his wealth to combating climate change and supporting individuals who can unify humanity.
In December, Scott announced that she has donated $2.15 billion through her organization, Yield Giving, over the past year. According to the announcement, the non-profit organization has donated to 360 organizations.
Despite Scott’s sale of billions of dollars’ worth of Amazon stocks in recent years, her net worth still exceeds $37 billion, according to Bloomberg’s billionaire index.
