Dr. Ali Meselhi, the Egyptian Minister of Supply and Internal Trade, announced that the strategic reserves of wheat reached 4.2 months, oil 5.3 months, and sugar 5.4 months.
He also mentioned that around 100 tons of sugar have been produced from the sugarcane crop so far, and preparations are underway to receive the beet crop in mid-March.
The Egyptian minister inspected today the progress of the construction of the grain silos project in West Port Said, which covers an area of 15,000 square meters with a storage capacity of 100,000 tons.
The Egyptian minister stated that the project’s completion rate reached 75%, and its total cost is $14 million, funded by the OPEC International Development Fund (OFID) in addition to self-financing from the General Company for Silos with a value of 350 million Egyptian pounds.
He also mentioned that the operational trials for the silo are expected to start in mid-20224.
The minister added that the silo includes 8 metal cells, with 4 cells having a diameter of 32 meters and a capacity of 14,000 tons, and 4 cells having a diameter of 27.5 meters with a capacity of 11,000 tons, in addition to 2 suction fans with a capacity of 600 tons per hour for each fan.
The minister highlighted that Egypt annually imports between 6 to 6 million tons of wheat through ports, emphasizing that no silo has been built in the ports since 1984.
