Russian state-owned energy company Gazprom announced on its official account with Russian communication platform Telegram that construction of the Soyuz Vostok gas pipeline, which runs through the territory of Mongolia and even China to deliver gas to the People’s Republic, is in its final phase.
This comes against the backdrop of Russia’s attempts to redirect natural gas supplies from Europe to Asian markets, especially China, which has been one of its top allies since the start of the Russian-Ukrainian war, making it an ideal market after Russia cut off gas supplies to Europe amid heightened tensions.
Russia and Mongolia had signed a memorandum of understanding on the establishment of a gas pipeline across Mongolia in 2019, the Soyuz Vostok project, which is part of the Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline.
