The Indian giant TATA Group has signed an agreement with the Gujarat State Government for the construction of a large lithium ion cell manufacturing plant, with initial investments worth an estimated 130 billion rupees ($1.6 billion).
According to media outlets, Tata Agarartas, a subsidiary of TATA, signed a memorandum of understanding to establish an electric vehicle battery plant with a production capacity of 20 GWh, which would provide direct and indirect employment to more than 13 thousand people, according to a government document posted online.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is working to achieve his country, which appears to have surpassed China as the world’s most populous country, net zero carbon emissions by 2070. TATA will make Gujarat a leader in lithium battery manufacturing, adding that the group will be assisted in establishing an environmental production system in the state.
