Kazakhstan, the world’s largest uranium producer, said it was tired of being treated as a”second-class citizen” at the International Atomic Energy Agency, as part of its bid for membership on the agency’s Board of directors, Bloomberg quoted a statement dated August 18, distributed to diplomats.
“Bloomberg” reported that Kazakhstan is preparing to submit a legal application to make it eligible for a seat on the board of the International Atomic Energy Agency.
Since the height of the Cold War, the rules governing the safety and security of the global nuclear industry have been set behind closed doors by the IAEA’s 35-member board of Governors, which excludes some key players in the field.
Kazakhstan, the world’s largest uranium producer, is trying to reorganize the status quo, according to “Bloomberg”.
In the statement, Kazakhstan added that its exclusion from the main decision-making Council of the IAEA is “extremely disappointing” and”leads to a violation of the basic principle of equality”.
