The UAE’s state-owned renewable energy company Masdar, also called the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company, announced a partnership with Emirates Steel Arkan to develop an iron production project based on green hydrogen.
Masdar, one of the world’s leading renewable energy companies, said in a press release that the pilot project is the first of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa region and is currently in the construction phase, located within the facilities of Emirates Steel’s production units in the industrial city of Abu Dhabi.
The facility is expected to be operational in early 2024, where green hydrogen will be used instead of natural gas to reduce iron ore, an essential step in the iron production process.
“This project has enormous potential for reducing emissions in parallel with increasing commercial yield,” Mohammed Jamil Al Ramhi, Chief Executive Officer of Masdar, said.
