Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company “Masdar”, signed an agreement to develop a wind power plant in Kazakhstan, with a production capacity of up to one gigawatt, the company’s first project in the Central Asian region.
According to a statement from Masdar, the agreement was signed with both the Ministry of Energy, the Kazakhstan Investment and Development Fund Management Company and Samrock Kazania, a contributor to the Kazakh sovereign wealth fund.
The new wind power plant will be equipped with a battery system for energy storage, the first phase of which will be developed in the Gambil region. The project will help Kazakhstan achieve its target of generating 50% more energy from renewable sources by 2050, according to the statement.
Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al-Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, President-designate of COP COP28, Chairman of Masdar, said that Kazakhstan’s wind power plant project is vital as it contributes to providing clean energy, reducing emissions and accelerating sustainable development.
Kazakhstan had set a target of reaching climate neutrality by 2060 and renewable energy would account for 50% of its energy mix by 2050.
